Le film se passe à Vicence, en 1956. Anna est la femme de Giacomo, impliqué dans la politique locale au conseil municipal. Dans la pratique, elle reste à la maison pour soccuper de sa belle-mère. Petit à petit, elle apprend à mieux connaître Angela, la bonne, que pour rompre la monotonie des jours de la province, la pousse à des confidences qui débouchent rapidement sur des jeux érotiques toujours plus poussés, causant la mort accidentelle de la belle-mère. Finalement, à linstigation dAngela, le tout abouti à un « ménage à trois » avec le pharmacien Mario.
